What's that peeking through the straw?

You wouldn't think anything would grow in the weather we've had lately.  Nights down in the mid-40's, days not much warmer and lots of rain, so imagine my surprise when I was out "checking my crops" today!

Potato vines!!
We've seen crows spending a little too much time digging around in that bed where we planted the potatoes, so that made my surprise at actually seeing potatoes growing even greater.  Some of the other seeds we planted earlier--cucumbers, radishes and some of those monarch butterfly flowers--are also coming up.  And we think we'll need to start picking onions soon to keep them thinned out.  The Saturday Market starts a week from tomorrow, but maybe I'm being overly optimistic!

Onions are growing!
Yesterday I said I was going to post pictures of our "tame" orchard--the planned orchard near the house.  Some of those trees are over 100 years old, some are from 30+ years ago, and some we have planted a few at a time in the last 10 years.  In among the variety of apple trees are also some cherry trees.

Smaller, younger trees need fences around to keep the deer away
Cherry tree with lots of blossoms!
Along the edge of the ravine leading down to the creek, there's a wild area with lots of forget-me-nots and lilacs down at the end.  Back when we still lived in Minneapolis, we always enjoyed our lilacs in our garden there in early May, then we'd come up here and enjoy them again growing here by the house, and then a few weeks later we can still enjoy the lilacs growing down by Lake Superior.  Spring can last a long time!

Still closed up pretty tight, but they will be out soon!
